USDA’s New
Food Plate
Nutrition Simplifed
The U.S. Department of Agriculture has replace the nutritional chart that many of us grew up with—the food pyramid—with a simpler food plate. The food plate graphically illustrates the recommended portions for each food group. The most important message they would like to communicate is that half of your meal should be made up of fruits and vegetables.
The intent is to provide a visual representation so that people begin to understand balance and portion size when filling their plate. The ChooseMyPlate.gov site provides additional information about the importance of exercise to maintain a healthy weight. There is also information to help you determine portion size for specific foods.
Now it’s not just your mama telling you to eat your vegetables!
Food Plate
I love this idea of the food plate replacing the pyramid. I think proper portion control is one of the number one issues and causes for our high obseity rate in America. Having the plate, and also showing appropriate portion sizes for each food item is a great idea! Thanks for sharing the link for choosemyplate.gov, it’s a great site more people need to be aware of and visit!
Thanks for the positive feedback, Traci. There have been several evolutions of the food pyramid in my lifetime. I think the new food plate makes much more sense and communicates the balance we need in our diets.
